Gustav Klimt

  • Born: 14. July 1862 in Baumgarten

Master of Art Nouveau

Gustav Klimt was an Austrian painter and one of the most important representatives of Art Nouveau. He was born on July 14, 1862 in Baumgarten near Vienna and died on February 6, 1918 in Vienna.

Klimt studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts and then worked as a freelance painter. In the early years of his career, he mainly created murals and ceiling frescoes for public buildings and churches. From the 1890s, however, he concentrated on painting on canvas, creating works of impressive beauty and originality.

From 1886 he began to undertake decorative work for the Burgtheater in Vienna. As a sought-after and popular salon painter, in 1897 he took over the leadership of the Vienna Secession, whose artists contributed decisively to the shaping of Art Nouveau. In the field of utilitarian design, Klimt also exerted a strong influence on the Wiener Werkstätten, founded in 1903 by Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser. His two-dimensional style, in which figurative and ornamental elements combined to create refined decorative-sensual effects, reached its peak in the universally admired erotic depictions of women. For Klimt, the world appeared "in female form."

Klimt's unique painting style is characterized by decorative, ornamental elements and an attention to detail. He often used gold and silver colors as well as precious stones and pearls in his works, creating paintings that looked almost like jewelry. His subjects were mostly female nudes, portraits and landscapes, which he interpreted and stylized in his own way.

Especially well known are Klimt's works from his "Golden Period," which lasted from 1899 to 1910. During this period, he created some of his most famous works, including "The Kiss," "Judith I," and "Adele Bloch-Bauer I." These works are notable for their opulent use of gold and ornamentation, as well as their depiction of women, often referred to as "Klimt women."

Klimt's art historical importance cannot be overstated. He is considered a pioneer of Art Nouveau and had a significant influence on the art of the early 20th century. His unique painting style not only inspired other artists, but also influenced numerous art movements, including Symbolism and Art Nouveau.
