Story: This is the story of a wild orchid, a book and a lifetime of dedication. 22 years ago, when I was a ‘young’ girl, my father and I had an idea: given that we were living in one of the most beautiful mountain resorts of Romania, a place named Sinaia, it would be a great idea to start photo-documenting all the species of alpine wild flowers of the Bucegi Mountains National Park, (the Meridional Carpathians). And that was exactly what we did! We started photographing, each year, from early spring to late summer, all the indigenous species of wild flowers. Years passed by, I grew up, left Romania, established myself in another country, studied, worked, changed careers, but never forgot the story my father and I began when I was a child. In time, the beautiful flowers we documented become a complete collection of amazing photographs. This year we are in the process of publishing the first volume of a series of albums, named ‘The Wild Orchids of the Bucegi Mountains National Park’. It will be the first of its kind in Romania, documenting all the native wild species of alpine orchids. It will contain some of the rarest and most elusive orchids of Romania, Europe and, even of the entire Northern Hemisphere. Very few people ever ‘met’ them in the wild … long may be that way! Description: There are approximately 400 different species of Cypripedium around the world. The amazing range of the colors and shapes of slipper-shaped pouches and of the linear-lanceolate petals go from white to red, purple, pink, red, yellow, green, some being very small others, due to repetitive hybridizations, becoming very large. The Cypripedium genus has a widespread distribution from Europe east through Asia to the Pacific Ocean, Asia reaching as far north as southern China, found in open woodland on moist calcareous soils. A large variety of species are found in North, Central and South America, in the wild or cultivated. The Norwegian municipality of Snåsa has a Cypripedium calceolus in its coat-of-arms. The Lady's Slipper is also the official provincial flower of Prince Edward Island, a province of Canada. Cypripedium calceolus is also found in the Bucegi Mountains (the Carpathian Mountains), Sinaia, Romania, (photograph by Nora de Angelli and Dan Anghelescu, my beloved father). Etymology The specific epithet ‘Cypripedium’ is the Latin meaning "little shoe" in reference to the slipper-like shape of the labellum. Cypripedium calceolus is also known in the United States of America as the ‘Moccasin Flower’ from its resemblance to a moccasin. This plant is becoming very rare in the wild due to over collecting for medicinal usage. The genus has a long history of use, dating back 2,500 years to the Far East, where they were used medicinally. Cypripedium genus orchids is said to be the equivalent of Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) in its effect as a nervine and sedative, though it is less powerful. The roots are harvested in the autumn and are dried for later use. In the interests of conservation, it is best not to use this herb unless you can be certain it was obtained from a cultivated source. Magical Uses In Pavel Ivanovich Melnikov's "In the Forests", a znakharka (Russian wise woman) calls the Cypripedium genus orchids ‘Adam's Head’, ‘Adam's Grass’, and ‘Cuckoo's Slippers’ and says: ’… it's good for every ill including driving away evil spirits’.
