A Colorado oil pump stands isolated against the onslaught of an approaching storm. The supercell driving the curtains of rain and hail produced several tornado reports from Denver eastward on the afternoon of May 21, 2014. Composing photographs of supercells is challenging. I usually chase solo, which means a flood of decisions for navigation, reading the storm, checking meteorological data, while looking for good vantages. Then all of that needs to coincide with an engaging point in the storm's life cycle. Happy intersections like that are pretty rare on most of my storm chases. Most of the time I feel like I'm just documenting the storm—which still makes for some great views. I enjoy reliving the chase through those images. But at least once per storm event, I really want to capture an image that goes beyond documentary. This was a huge, fearsome storm, with tornadic potential. One lurking problem was that any tornadoes were probably going to hide behind an opaque wall of rain and hail. While pacing ahead, I took brief trips down side roads looking for interesting views. On one of those roads, I noticed this pump standing isolated at the junction of a fallow field and heavy sky. I usually try to include wider views of storm structure in my shots, but the simplicity of this view worked better. It seemed to create suspense over what threat remains to be seen just outside the frame. When I stewed on the image later, I started to feel a story or a metaphor in it too. I think you could take it a few different ways. Up to the viewer to decide :) As I migrate images here, the larger storm gallery is currently visible at perezmedia.smugmug.com/Storms/
