The relationship between human and horse is one of the most important themes of the American rodeo. While most equestrian events represent the cooperation between the two, Bareback Bronc is more like a duel between man and animal. This photo was taken at a small county fair in Ohio. This is the last and most dramatic in a sequence of photos in which the horse, which is trying to buck the cowboy off of his back, actually fell to the ground, and then scrambled to regain his footing. Although the competitor was disqualified for using two hands on the strap, the crowd took it as a moral victory that he was able to keep hold onto the horse and regain his seating as the horse stood up. The horse is always interesting in a rodeo, whether working with the cowboy, or against him. In this case, the horse won on points, but he didn't manage to dismount the cowboy.
