CONTEXT The bright summer nights in Iceland are a wonderful time to photograph. The light is wonderful, the colors beautiful and fresh and the surroundings often very still and quiet. The atmosphere in the nature is unique in my opinion and based on my experience. When I took this image I woke up very early, one could say in the middle of the night. I had already planned to take image like that on this particular spot and had to drive for one hour to get there. The weather was just like I wanted it, very peaceful with beautiful light and sky. In addition to the photo equipment I also took a fishing rod with me which has rarely been used for its purpose for a very long time, but it worked well for the fisherman in the image.composition stronger. THE PICTURE I took this photo with Canon EOS 5D camera and Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM II lens. The settings: Focal length: 16 mm, aperture: f/18, shutter speed: 1/8 sec, ISO: 100. I also used a tripod and a polarizer filter on the lens. I put the camera on a tripod, placed a little chair at the end of the small pier and the fishing rod by the side of it. The tripod was located a few meters from the pier so after I had put the self timer on for 10 seconds I had to run the pier, take a seat, grasp the fishing rod and throw the line out before it snapped. PROCESSING In this image I worked mostly in levels, curves and hue/saturation to approve the colors, light and contrast. I also used the cloned tool a bit; in the background behind the water and under the mountain there was a little house which I found distracting for the image as a whole - so I cloned it out. OUTCOME I took several photos and liked this one the most. The weather conditions were very good, it was still and the clouds in the sky were beautiful, making a fine background and adding to the mood. I also think the composition works well and when everything comes together I find the image reveal a peaceful moment on a beautiful morning in the fisherman’s life. I wanted it to tell a story and I think it does. At least some judges thought so when they decided to put this image in the first place in an Icelandic summer photo contest. HINTS Try to tell a story with your images. It’s possible to find stories everywhere if looked carefully and then try to frame them with good composition using the environment and surroundings as possible and I especially mention the sky and the clouds in that context. And if you are photographing in Iceland I would encourage you to go out in the bright summer nights. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION This photo is taken by a small pond in Brynjudalur which is located in Hvalfjodur on the west cost of Iceland. BIOGRAPHY I am an amateur photographerwas born in Iceland 1961. Photography has been my favourite hobby for a very long time, ever since I got my first camera when I was 12 years old.
