Hawksbill turtle swimming through the coral reef searching for food. Little Cayman Island Bloody Bay Marine Park. On our 2016 New Years dive I saw this turtle on her path scanning the reef for food and I could estimate where she would be in a few minutes, so I positioned myself between some corals and as expected the turtle swam directly towards me. Turtles in protected areas of coral reefs are used to divers and allow close encounters like this to enable photographers making close up images in their natural habitat. Hawksbill turtles are a critically endangered species and need more protection. They feed mainly on sponges by using their narrow pointed beaks to extract them from crevices on the reef, but also eat sea anemones and jellyfish. Sea turtles are the living representatives of a group of reptiles that has existed on Earth and travelled our seas for the last 100 million years. They are a fundamental link in marine ecosystems and help maintain the health of coral reefs and sea grass beds.
