This was taken in the salt-mines about 2 hours drive out of Nha Trang, Vietnam. The huge salt lakes are allowed to evaporate in the sun, leaving behind a skin of concentrated salt crystals. The men scrape the salt into piles, then the women pick up the salt, put it into their baskets and carry them up to the trucks for transportation to the big cities. I had to leave my hotel at 3am, to get to the salt-mines at first light. It was an eerie sight as I gazed through the early morning haze, and saw long processions of women hauling their burdens in silence. I stayed all morning, because the photographic opportunities were amazing. Not many tourists ever venture this far out, so I think they were as intrigued with me, as I was with them. I took this photo as the oppressive heat of the day started to take its toll on the ladies. This one frame epitomizes the incredibly hard work that these ladies have to endure, all for a mere $5 per day.
