Because of the warm and humid climate, over the years iron oxide deposits have gradually turned the brown soil into a series of fiery, purplish or brick red hues. In Dongchuan District, about 40 kilometers away from Kunming, lies Dongchuan Red Land. Extending over a rough circle about 50 kilometers in diameter, this is the most concentrated and typical area of its kind on the Yunnan Plateau, located in the far southwest of China. In May and June every year, when the white rape flowers are in full blossom and the golden wheat is ripening, the scene is much more colorful than the greens and reds that are visible now. From September to December – the harvest time for rapeseed, potatoes and buckwheat and the time for the winter wheat to sprout – the poplars turn to yellow and the lacquer trees to red, and provide another scene of spectacular colors.
