CONTEXT The idea behind this image is old and had regularly been popping up in my mind for some time when I finally decided to carry it out and try to make a photo out of it. I went to a geothermal area not far from my home and took a hat, an overcoat and a scarf with me and of course also my camera equipment. The weather was selected and just like I wanted it, bright sunny day and a bit windy. On the spot I set my camera on the tripod against the sun in the middle of the geothermal area where the steam was rather thick and moving by the wind in front of the sunlight. After I had put my coat and hat on I walked slowly through the steam in front of the camera while shooting using the self timer. THE PICTURE I took this photo with Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL camera and Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens. The settings: Focal length: 17mm, aperture: f/16, shutter speed: 1/200sec, ISO: 200. I also used a tripod. PROCESSING My original idea was to make a black and white image and when I started my work in the post processing I saw it immediately that it would be work best that way. So after the black and white conversion I did not have to do much more - other than a slight crop and sharpening. OUTCOME The outcome was better than I imagined I have to say. I wanted to create a timeless vision of a man with a hat in silhouette walking in a mystic atmosphere heading to the light. I wanted to create an image that wakes up feelings of a very important story behind the image - I kind of symbol which just particular individuals with certain knowledge can understand and read. HINTS My first and only hint would be to emphasize the importance of being very careful to photograph in these circumstances - outside all security lines on a geothermal area. I don’t recommend anyone to do that because it can be very dangerous. So don’t take my stupidity as an exemplary :) ADDITIONAL INFORMATION I want to point out that this image would not work if it didn’t reveal some mood to the viewer - which I think it does. That was my aim and I think the steam that partly covers the light from the sun makes that atmosphere in hand with the silhouette and the dark black and white tones. I would also like to add that this photo is taken on the geaothermal area named “Gunnuhver” on Reykjanes peninsula on the southwest of Iceland. BIOGRAPHY I am an amateur photographer, born in Iceland 1961. Photography has been my favorite hobby for a very long time, ever since I got my first camera when I was 12 years old. I travel a lot which fits well with my love for nature and landscape photography. My photos have been published far and wide and have won prizes in many international photo contests. My homepage
